Sony is considering cutting specifications to reduce the console's price.
Insider KeplerL2 reported that Sony is exploring the possibility of lowering the technical specifications of the PlayStation 6 amid memory shortages and rising component costs. The reduction may primarily affect the RAM. Previously, discussions mentioned a configuration with 32 GB, but now the company allegedly leans towards 24 GB with a narrower 128-bit bus. According to the insider, this is one of the few ways to significantly reduce the device's cost without critically worsening its specifications.KeplerL2 estimates that switching to a 128-bit bus will allow Sony to save about $60 on each console sold. An additional advantage will be the simplification of the APU architecture, which will increase the yield of usable chips.Developers, according to the source, would still prefer a larger amount of memory even at the cost of reduced bandwidth — Nintendo Switch 2 is cited as an example, where increased RAM improved the performance of Final Fantasy VII Remake.Earlier, Sony's management admitted that the final launch dates for the PS6 have not yet been determined precisely because of instability in the component market. Reduced specifications may complicate the task of convincing PS5 owners to switch to the new generation.
