The new console will significantly surpass the Steam Deck in graphical power.
On the eve of the summer launch of Steam Machine, Valve updated the Steamworks documentation, officially confirming the device's technical specifications for the first time. The console is designed to fill the niche between the portable Steam Deck and a full-fledged gaming PC.
The hardware includes a six-core AMD Zen 4 processor and a discrete AMD RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units and 8 GB of GDDR6 video memory running at up to 2.45 GHz. The video subsystem performance is estimated at 8.8 TFLOPS, which is 5.5–6 times higher than the Steam Deck — Valve itself uses the phrase "six times more powerful."
To pass certification, games on Steam Machine must run no worse than 1080p/30 FPS, although the company aims for the ability to run some projects at 4K and 60 FPS. The release date and retail price have not yet been specified; according to rumors, the latter may be higher than expected due to component shortages in the market.
