Garry Newman assures that the studio is not making a sequel, and the origin of the Rust 2 page on Steam remains unclear.
On April 9, a discussion appeared on Reddit about a screenshot of an empty Rust 2 page on Steam, which can be freely accessed by ID 2869120; according to SteamDB, the application was created back in November 2024. A post titled “Rust 2 exists?!” was published by a new account with no history, but the topic quickly gained popularity. In the comments, one of Facepunch Studios’ leaders, Alistair McFarlane, commented with the short phrase “You saw nothing,” which many fans interpreted as a hint at the preparation of a Rust 2 announcement.
However, in a comment to PC Gamer, Facepunch founder Garry Newman stated that the studio is not developing Rust 2 and that he “has no idea” where this Steam page came from. Amid this uncertainty, SteamDB administrators marked the Rust 2 application as suspicious. Currently, Facepunch continues to develop the original Rust and is preparing to release the sandbox s&box, which is called the spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod; its release on Steam is scheduled for April 28.
