Amid the project's high costs, players are concerned whether it can withstand competition from service shooters.

Forbes journalist Paul Tassi reported that Bungie studio spent over $200 million on the development of Marathon, and when including related expenses, the total cost could have exceeded $250 million — this estimate does not include future support and new content releases. The shooter was released just over a month ago on PC and consoles, with about 70% of the audience playing on computers: the average playtime reaches 28 hours, with 22% of users having already played more than 50 hours, and 7% over 100 hours.
At the same time, online numbers are gradually declining: the current daily peak holds at around 25–30 thousand players compared to 88 thousand at launch and about 143 thousand during the free server test. In Steam sales charts, Marathon ranks around the 80th position, and on Xbox — beyond the hundredth spot. Against the backdrop of a series of failures of other service newcomers, players fear the project might repeat the fate of the quickly closed Highguard and Concord, but Bungie insists it plans to develop the game for years, regularly update it, and improve key gameplay elements. Currently, the stylish extraction shooter is available on PC (Steam), Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5 and offers a full Russian localization.
