Face scanning or ID verification — Sony chooses strictness to protect minors.
Sony PlayStation has launched mandatory age verification for users from the UK and Ireland: the information appeared on the company’s official website. Verification can already be completed — several formats are available, including biometric face scanning and ID document verification. This measure is linked to UK legislation requirements that mandated online services to implement strict age verification almost a year ago.For those who refuse verification, access to a range of features will be blocked from June 2026: text and voice chats, Discord, friend-only streams, as well as streams to third-party platforms — Twitch and YouTube. In certain games, such users will lose the ability to communicate with other players or interact with user-generated content. At the same time, purchasing and launching games labeled "Adults Only" will apparently still be allowed — no corresponding restrictions are currently planned.
