Developers at Bungie are ready to change the shooter’s story based on player influence, but the current online status of the project leaves much to be desired.
Creative Director Julia Nardin spoke with GamesRadar+ journalists and shared the long-term development strategy for Marathon. The studio has a multi-year storyline plan, but it remains flexible: players’ actions will be able to directly adjust the narrative direction. The creators are also focusing on making the lore understandable for newcomers, so that any season serves as a comfortable starting point for those who missed the beginning of the story.
Despite grand ambitions, the shooter is experiencing a decline. In spring, the project managed to attract 2.2 million users (according to Ampere data), but by the end of the first season, the numbers had dropped. In early May, the peak daily online count on Steam barely reached 14,400 people, which is noticeably lower than competitors — for example, the niche Hunt: Showdown had 1,896 daily players, twice as many, and ARC Raiders even surpassed 120,000.
