Nintendo adjusts prices: now buying games in the eShop will be cheaper than purchasing physical editions.

Nintendo of America has issued an official statement announcing a shift in its pricing strategy . Starting in May 2026, the retail price for Nintendo-published games exclusive to the Switch 2 will vary depending on the format, with digital editions becoming cheaper than their physical counterparts . The first title to fall under this new model is the upcoming platformer Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Pre-orders for the game opened on March 25, showing a digital price tag of $60 on the eShop, compared to $70 for the physical cartridge .
According to Nintendo, the price discrepancy simply reflects the different costs associated with manufacturing, packaging, and distributing physical goods . The company also noted that third-party retail partners remain free to set their own prices for both physical copies and digital codes .
As reported by VGC, this pricing adjustment has already taken effect not only in the US but also in the UK, though physical editions of certain Nintendo games in the British market were already more expensive even before this official statement. This policy shift arrives shortly after reports that Nintendo plans to slash its Switch 2 hardware production by 30%, following lower-than-expected performance in the final quarter of 2025.
