James Cameron's third Avatar film earned about 1.5 billion dollars at the global box office — an impressive amount, but noticeably more modest than the results of the first two parts, which grossed around 2.9 and 2.3 billion respectively. Even before the release, the director said that the trilogy needed to perform seriously well at the box office, otherwise they would have to think about how to shoot the fourth and fifth parts with lower costs.
According to TheWrap, Disney has already joined these discussions: the studio expects that the next two films, whose release dates have formally already been announced, will be less risky in terms of budget. It is reported that the production of the trilogy cost about 350 million dollars, and marketing required another approximately 150 million.
Sources from the publication also claim that the company is uncertain whether it is worth opening a second Avatar-themed area in the California amusement park, limiting itself to the already existing location in Florida. Disney veteran and former attraction designer Jim Shull believes that financially the trilogy performed "normally," but the franchise did not leave a significant cultural mark: according to him, the public does not demand "even more" Avatar and, if desired, recalls the brand through the already existing attractions…
