The sequel to "Superman" has officially entered production. The release date is July 9, 2027.
On April 20, James Gunn announced on social media the start of filming for "Superman: Legacy" — the second part of his "Superman Saga." The post included the first photo from the set: a chessboard with pieces arranged and a badge with Luthor's name — a telling hint at the central dynamic of the plot. Principal photography is taking place at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia, under the working title Exodus; behind the camera is cinematographer Sam McCurdy, who previously collaborated with Gunn on "The Suicide Squad."
According to the plot, Clark Kent (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) are forced to unite against a common threat — the cosmic invader Brainiac, played by German actor Lars Eidinger. Brainiac is a hyper-intelligent alien who first appeared in comics in 1958; his ambitions are so vast that they compel even sworn enemies to stand shoulder to shoulder. Gunn himself described the new film as "equally a story about Lex and a story about Superman.""Superman: Legacy" will be released internationally on July 9, 2027 — exactly two years after the first "Superman," which grossed over $600 million worldwide. Before this release, DCU audiences can look forward to two more projects: "Supergirl" on June 26, 2026, and "The Authority" on September 11, 2026.
